Ergonomic Exercise

Ergonomic Exercise

When people talk about repetitive motion injuries, they refer to injuries that result from performing the same physical motion over and over again.  Over time, the constant repetition of certain movements may cause temporary or permanent damage to the tendons, cartilage, nerves, ligaments, or muscles involved.

In a call center setting, where phone agents spend all of their time at a computer terminal, injuries to arms and wrists can be very common.   However, other injuries can be associated with repetitive motion.  As a call center manager, you may encounter the following injuries in your call center:  Tendonitis, eyestrain, backaches, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

As with everything else, a good approach to dealing with repetitive motion injuries may be to help prevent them instead of waiting until they affect your employees and your call center's productivity.  There are numerous ergonomic exercises designed to help prevent injuries.  Some of the exercises may be as simple covering your eyes for a period of time, or rotating your wrists to give them a break from typing.

Some of the exercises may actually make your employees feel silly at first, specially in a crowded call center floor.  However, a little encouragement, reinforcement and education could go a long way in gaining buy in from your employees.

Some of the most common ergonomic exercises include:

  • Neck stretch

  • Thoracic spine extension stretch

  • Pectoral corner stretch

  • Chair rotation stretch

  • Shoulder pinches

  • Forearm stretches

  • Arms behind back stretches

  • Overhead reaching
