Do not call list rule

Do Not Call List Rule

Consumers can add their phone number to the national do not call registry free of charge.  Once a number has been added, it will remain on the national do not call list for five years.   Consumers who change their minds after their number has been added, may remove it from the registry at any time.

Once a number has been added to the registry, it is not only illegal for most companies to contact the customer, but is also counterproductive.  There are very few exceptions in which an entity may contact registered numbers.  Those who do not fit the exception criteria  probably don't have much of a chance of gaining revenue from the people they contact.  Instead, organizations that do not observe the law have a good chance of losing revenue in the way of fines.

Customers who register their numbers are definitely not interested in buying anything over the phone.  The fact that they have taken the time and trouble to register their numbers in the first place makes their intensions very clear.  However, telemarketers should not be discouraged by the existence of the do not call registry.  A positive way of looking at the situation is the fact that those who have not registered would likely be open to doing business with telemarketers.  As an optimist, you could say that the do not call list is just a tool to help your organization focus on selling to those interested in its products and services.
